What is a road work BOQ?

A road work BOQ is a bill of quantities for building a road or pavement: site clearance and earthwork, the sub-base and base, bituminous layers or a concrete pavement, kerbs, footpaths and drainage, and markings and signs. Each item has a unit, a measured quantity and a rate, and the sections add up to the cost of the road.

What is in the road work BOQ workbook?

  • Project Details — name of work, parties, drawing and tender references, the source of your rates, and the add-on percentages.
  • BOQ — suggested items in six sections — site clearance and earthwork, sub-base and base, bituminous works, concrete pavement, kerbs, footpaths and drainage, markings and signs — with blank rows for your own.
  • Abstract — every section's total, the add-ons and the total estimated cost, with a count of items still missing a rate.
  • Filled Sample — a worked example with illustrative quantities and rates.

How does the road work BOQ sheet calculate?

  • Amount = ROUND(quantity × rate, 2). An item with a quantity and no rate shows RATE MISSING and adds nothing, so a missing rate is never mistaken for a nil one.
  • Section sub-total = the sum of its amounts, with a count of items still without a rate.
  • Abstract: cost of works = the sum of the sections; contingencies and contractor's profit and overheads are each a percentage of the cost of works; GST is a percentage of the total before GST. Every percentage starts at 0.

Worked example from the sample sheet: a 300 m internal road, 6 m wide, comes to Rs. 37,57,800 before add-ons. The granular sub-base is 300 × 6 × 0.2 = 360 cum and the wet mix macadam 300 × 6 × 0.25 = 450 cum.

How do you use the road work BOQ template?

  1. Fill in Project Details, including where your rates come from and any add-on percentages.
  2. On the BOQ sheet, overwrite or delete the suggested items and add your own in the blank rows of each section.
  3. Enter the measured quantity and the rate for each item. An item with a quantity and no rate shows RATE MISSING and is left out of the totals.
  4. Check the Abstract: section totals, add-ons, the total, and the count of items still without a rate.

What should you check before relying on the road work BOQ?

  • No rates are supplied. Price from current quotations or the schedule of rates your contract names, and record the source; the rates on the Filled Sample are illustrative only.
  • Layer thicknesses, materials and grades come from the pavement design and your specification; the descriptions leave them for you to state.
  • Layer quantities are compacted volumes: length × width × compacted thickness.

What does each column mean?

ColumnWhat goes in it
S. No.Section letter and item number, for example B.2.
Description of ItemWhat is to be done, in tender style. Write in the product, thickness, grade or number of coats your specification calls for.
UnitThe unit of measurement: sqm, rmt, cum, nos, set or job.
QuantityThe measured quantity in that unit.
Rate (Rs.)Your rate per unit, from quotations, a schedule of rates or your own analysis. None is supplied.
Amount (Rs.)Auto-calculated. Quantity × rate, rounded to two decimals.
CheckAuto-calculated. RATE MISSING or QTY MISSING when only one of the two is entered.

Everything in this band is priced on a bill of quantities. The BOQ format in Excel is that bill — pre-sectioned by trade, with an abstract that totals it — and every rate you settle here is applied against its measured quantities.

Get the quantities from your drawings

A template gives you the structure. The measuring — scaling every quantity off the drawing set — is still three to seven days of work. Upload your architectural and structural PDFs and InstaBOQ reads the drawings, extracts the quantities, and fills this same structure.

Questions

How are road layer quantities calculated?

Length x width x compacted thickness for each layer. A 300 m road 6 m wide with 200 mm of granular sub-base needs 300 x 6 x 0.2 = 360 cubic metres. Sprayed coats such as prime and tack coat are measured in square metres.

What do GSB, WMM, DBM and BC stand for?

Granular sub-base, wet mix macadam, dense bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete: the usual layers of a flexible road, from the sub-base up to the wearing course.

What are prime coat and tack coat?

A prime coat is a thin spray of bitumen on the granular base before the first bituminous layer. A tack coat is a thin spray between bituminous layers so that they bond. Both are measured in square metres.

Should the road be bituminous or concrete?

That is a pavement design decision based on traffic, the subgrade and cost. The BOQ has sections for both; use the one your design calls for.

Who decides the thickness of each layer?

The engineer who designs the pavement, following the design guidelines your client or authority uses. Enter the thicknesses from that design in the item descriptions and quantities.
