What are a muster roll and a wage register?
A muster roll records who worked on site on each day of the wage period; the wage register turns that attendance into wages due, overtime, deductions and net pay for each worker. Together they are the evidence behind every labour payment, and the first record an inspector, a principal employer or an auditor asks for.
What is in the muster roll workbook?
- Project Details — project particulars, the wage period, normal working hours per day and the overtime multiplier.
- Muster Roll — one row per worker, one column per day, marked P, H, A or W. Days worked and unmarked days are counted for you.
- Wage Register — reads days worked and overtime from the muster roll, row for row. You enter the daily wage, deductions and, optionally, the notified minimum wage to check against.
- Trade Summary — headcount, man-days, overtime and wages by trade.
- Filled Sample — a one-week muster and wage sheet for six workers.
How does the muster roll sheet calculate?
- Days worked = days marked P + ½ × days marked H. Days outside the wage period are ignored even if marked.
- Basic wages = days worked × daily wage.
- Overtime wages = overtime hours × (daily wage ÷ normal working hours per day) × overtime multiplier.
- Net payable = basic wages + overtime wages − advance recovered − PF / ESI − other deductions.
- A worker with no daily wage shows RATE MISSING, never ₹0, and the Check column flags unmarked days, a wage below the minimum wage you entered, or deductions larger than gross wages.
Worked example from the sample sheet (illustrative wage, 8-hour day, multiplier 2): a mason present 6 days at ₹850 a day earns ₹5,100. Six overtime hours add 6 × 850 ÷ 8 × 2 = ₹1,275, for gross wages of ₹6,375. After a ₹500 advance is recovered, net payable is ₹5,875.
How do you use the muster roll template?
- Fill in Project Details: the first and last date of the wage period (31 days at most), normal working hours per day, and the overtime multiplier.
- On the Muster Roll, list each worker once with their trade. The day columns date themselves from the period.
- Mark each day P, H, A or W, and enter each worker's total overtime hours for the period.
- Finish any unmarked days — they are flagged on the wage register until you do.
- On the Wage Register, enter each worker's daily wage and any deductions. Net payable calculates.
- Pay against the register and take the worker's signature or thumb impression.
What should you check before relying on the muster roll?
- No wage rates or minimum wages are supplied. Minimum wages are notified by the Central or State government for each category of worker and revised periodically. Use the notification in force for your site and period.
- The overtime multiplier defaults to 2 — twice the ordinary rate of wages, the statutory overtime rate for building and construction workers. Confirm it, and what counts as the ordinary rate, against your contract and the law that applies to your site.
- PF, ESI and other statutory deductions are entered by hand. Whether they apply depends on your registrations and on wage ceilings the sheet does not check.
- The wage register is linked to the muster roll by row. Insert or delete worker rows on both sheets together.
What does each column mean?
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Name / Father's or Husband's Name | The worker's identity as it appears on the muster roll, one row per worker for the whole wage period. |
| Trade / Category | Mason, helper, carpenter, bar bender and so on — picked from the Trade Summary list so the trade-wise totals pick every worker up. |
| Day columns (1–31) | P = present, H = half day, A = absent, W = weekly off or holiday. The columns date themselves from the wage period; days outside it are greyed out and ignored. |
| Days Worked | Auto-calculated. Present days plus half of the half days. |
| Unmarked Days | Auto-calculated. Days inside the period with no mark. Anything other than zero is flagged on the wage register. |
| Daily Wage / Notified Min. Wage | Entered by you. If you enter the notified minimum wage for the worker's category, a daily wage below it is flagged. |
| Basic / OT / Gross Wages | Auto-calculated. Days worked × daily wage, plus OT hours × (daily wage ÷ normal hours) × the overtime multiplier. |
| Advance / PF & ESI / Other Deductions | Entered by you. Statutory deductions are manual because whether they apply depends on registrations and wage ceilings the sheet cannot check. |
| Net Payable | Auto-calculated. Gross wages less total deductions. Take the signature or thumb impression against it. |
The muster roll and the daily record should tell the same story. The manpower section of the daily progress report is the day-by-day count this attendance is checked against.

A progress record is measured against the estimate it reports against. Upload your drawings and InstaBOQ builds the measured BOQ — so "work executed today" can be tracked line by line against a real quantity.
